“Ask! What shall I give you?”, this was the statement that God said to King Solomon in 1 Kings 3:5 . In Mark 10:35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.” In the first situation God lays a blank page before Solomon, in the second situation two of the disciples ask Jesus for a blank page upon which they can get whatever they request.
It is one thing to expect God to give us a blank page or cheque by which we can write or obtain whatever we would like. But have we ever considered giving God a blank page upon which He can write His requests for our life?
Many times I’ve heard people say, “I’ll do anything for God as long as He doesn’t ask me to …..” The sentence is usually completed with something that the individual would find embarrassing, challenging, costly or out of the comfort range of that individual. In Hebrews 10:7 and Psalm 40:6-8 we are told about our Lord Jesus delighting to do the will of God.
Doing the will of God is not always enjoyable or easy. When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane He wrestled in prayer about if there might be another way. Yet in the end, for the joy that was set before Him Jesus endured the cross (Heb. 12:2), and was able to submit His will to that of the Father (Luke 22:42). Jesus could submit Himself to the will of God because He knew that His Father was loving, merciful and also just and that God would bring about good in all that He did.
Perhaps we struggle giving to God a blank page by which He can do with us however He wishes because we do not fully see Him as loving and wanting the best for ourselves and others. Many are unprepared to allow their lives to be like clay in the hands of the potter (Jer. 18:4-7), thinking that perhaps they know better what is right for themselves than God would.
Lord Jesus help us to see and experience your love, mercy and Your good intentions so that we are faithful to open ourselves before You without reservation. Then work Your purposes in our Lives.
