The Gift of the Gab

Some people seem to have the gift of the gab. It seems like they can easily talk about anything and it all flows well and all makes sense. That is not the way it is with me. Many times when I should speak, I find my mind goes blank and I can think of nothing to say! The past week I was leading a short term mission trip into Mexico. On several occasions either myself or my team members were asked to speak on short notice, without much preparation time, and on topics that we rarely spoke about. Immediately we found ourselves scrambling for words and ideas hoping to convey truth in the situation of need. In looking back, it was obvious that God ministered and worked in those situations, this was likely more of His mercy upon us then our deserving any help, but from our perspective it sure wasn’t easy nor was it stress free. Of course the easy thing to do would be to say, “Well I made it through that time with no preparation, God jumped in to help me, I guess I don’t need to prepare for the next time either, as God will jump in to help me again.” Somehow I think that type of thinking would be presumptuous and would be taking advantage of the grace and mercy of God. We are exhorted to “study to show ourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Tim 2:15). The scripture encourages us to “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. (2Tim 4:2)” It was obvious that I was not ready, no mater what season was before me. Why was that?

Perhaps the concept of being ready at all times, means that we need to constantly be thinking about what God is doing in our life. We need to be mediating on God’s word and how it applies to our life. We need to be pondering how God’s word applies to the situations around us. It will then be out of this meditation that we will have much to say when the Spirit of the Lord gives opportunity.

Lord help us to be aware of You, Your word and Your ways so that we would have many relevant things about You
