They Don’t Get It

Sometimes there are things happening in your life that others, i.e. non Christians just don’t understand. You’ve all probably had times when there were puzzled looks and maybe even snickers of unbelief or mocking. Like “why do you waste time going to church?” or “Why do you give money away” or “why don’t you hang out doing ….” Or “why not join us at … and watch …”

1 John 3:1 says “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.”

Because we are a part of the family of God there are some differences in values and perspectives to life than from those that are not Christians. Hence in:

  • 1 John 2:3 it says that we will keep God’s commandments.
  • 1 John 2:6 we walk and conduct ourselves as Jesus would have done if He were here.
  • 1 John 2:9 we have a genuine concern and love for the people around us.
  • 1 John 2:12 we know our sins are forgiven.
  • 1 John 2:13 we have overcome the evil one.
  • 1 John 2:14 we actually have a relationship with God.
  • 1 John 2:16 we do not love the things of the world.

The list could go on but all of the above are not easily understood by those whose lives are build upon non-Christian perspectives. As the Apostle John writes he encourages us. In affect he says, “Yes, others will not appreciate your values or your lifestyle, don’t let that be your focus, rather see the great love of the Father for us and let that be the point of focus for your life.”  Others who are not Christians may not understand our commitments and our values, however we can rejoice in God’s great acceptance which is more important than the friendship of those around us who don’t yet walk in God’s great ways.
