LAST WEEK
Our small groups have started a two-week series looking at the life of Jesus-specifically, words that he spoke. For this first lesson, we focused on three chunks of Scripture from Matthew 5-part of the Sermon on the Mount-that have particular relevance to teenagers: valuing other people, becoming a trustworthy person, and choosing to love others.
God wants us to use our words to build others us, he wants us to be people who are dependable and believable, and he wants us to have a genuine love for both our friends and our enemies.
We emphasized obedience to Jesus in these three areas as a way to lead a life of significance. It’s not about fulfilling religious duties or earning God’s love or becoming super spiritual. It’s about helping our teenagers become young men and women who significantly impact other people because of their deep relationship with and love for Jesus.
Here are some questions you might want to use in conversation with your teenager about this week’s lesson.
- What are some ways teenagers devalue each other? In other words, how do some teenagers use their words and actions to say that some people are less important than others are?
- How have your friendships been hurt by dishonesty and distrust? How have your friendships been helped by honesty and trust?
- What are some of the possible results of loving your enemies?
