Topic: Manipulating Facts

Discussion Starter:

It’s crazy how close that fake commercial is to reality, isn’t it? Drug marketers are experts at highlighting the benefits of their products while making the side effects seem harmless. We are often just as good at manipulating facts. Sometimes we tell the others just enough of the truth so we aren’t technically lying while not telling the whole truth.

For example, we tell our parents we have completed our homework while not telling them that we don’t fully understand the assignment. Or we tell our friends that we are “fine” because that’s easier than the truth that we are physically fine but emotionally hurting.

At the same time, Ephesians 5:1 teaches believers that we are called children of God. Living up to that reality, that God both knows us intimately enough to call us His children, is both a burden and an amazing opportunity as we reveal His character as we interact with others.

Three Questions:

Would you rather be known as brutally honest or super polite?
What is one side effect you’ve experienced because someone lied to you?
Which person is easier to manipulate, a parent or a friend?

Wrestle with this:

If you are a child of God and God is the author of truth, what does manipulating facts teach you about your relationship with God?
