LAST WEEK
This week our small groups began a two-week series on prayer. Prayer is an important part of our relationship with God, and it’s something most teenagers struggle to understand or practice. (OK, adults struggle, too.) There is no way we could possibly cover every aspect of prayer in two weeks, so we are focusing on why we pray and how we pray.
In this first lesson, we talked about why we pray, using two short passages of Scripture as our foundation: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 and James 5:13-18. We challenged our students to examine their prayer habits this week, look for opportunities to spend more time in prayer, and take some practical steps to become more joyful, more prayerful, and more thankful.
I’d encourage you to find time this week to talk with your teenager about the reasons for prayer. Here are some possible questions you might use for some good family discussion:
- Why would God want us to practice joy, prayer, and thankfulness?
- How does prayer remind you that God is God?
- How can I help you or encourage you to spend more time in prayer?
I’d also encourage you to use this opportunity to pray more as a family. As a family, make it a point to pray together. If your family already has a regular prayer time, I’d challenge you to spend more time praying this week or give your children a greater leadership role during prayer.
As always, thanks for your support for our youth ministry and our small groups. Have a blessed week!
