In 1 Kings 18, Elijah challenges King Ahab and the false prophets, there needs to be a contest, “the God who answers by fire is the true God.” The false prophets start first, they prepare their altar, they call on Baal for half a day, they cut themselves till their blood gushes. Nothing happens.
Then it is Elijah’s turn, he prepares his altar with extra water on top and he prays, “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.” Did you notice that Elijah did not ask for fire to come down, he did not beg for a spark or a glowing ember. However, he did ask for God to let it be known that He is God. He did not need to ask for fire, only that the people would know that God was the true God. Within Elijah was the confidence that God knew best what to do. He just wanted God to be glorified. He could leave the details up to God.
In our prayers and supplications can we rest confidently, trusting that God will do what is necessary for His Name to be glorified? Then, when God does do something, or it seems like He is doing nothing, or it seems like He is doing what we don’t like, can we also rest, trusting and knowing the He is doing that which will cause His name to be glorified?
Lord Jesus, we want You to be glorified in all aspects of our lives, and we invite You to do whatever is necessary for that to take place.
