I know it’s one week before Christmas but I got one gift early. Something that I’ve been keeping my eye on for many years and this year I got it and I even got it early!!! Thank you to the one who sacrificed to give this to me, I truly am thankful and grateful. But why is it that now that I have it the excitement is already gone? I barely unwrapped it and now it sits unused. The fulfillment from the gift seemed short lived.
That is the nature of all things here on the earth. Hence we always want more and feel that if we just get more we will be complete and we’ll be content. However the satisfaction and fulfillment gained from the things here on earth is short lived. Therefore we are to labour for that which truly satisfies (see Is 55:1-3).
It seems, with the cravings that we humans have and the restlessness within us, that if we were to live forever then it would require an infinite number of things to keep us from being bored or dissatisfied, but that is what God is all about. He is infinite and all powerful and all wise and all loving. God can provide us with new and varied aspects of His working and power, in the context of our relationship with Him, so that we will always be satisfied and content. The Psalmist says “You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.” (Psalms 145:16 NKJV)
In heaven, with God, we will be changed to be like Him and true satisfaction will be present, “As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.” (Psalms 17:15 NKJV) We don’t have to wait till heaven to find our satisfaction and contentment. Hebrews 13:5 tells us that it is possible to be content in any situation because God will never leave or forsake us.
Our walk with God can and should be such that He brings true lasting contentment to us.
Lord Jesus show us when we have tried to get fulfillment from things that will not satisfy. Bring us into a closer relationship with You so that true contentment and lasting satisfaction will abound in our lives.
