I Split The Rock

In Exodus 17 the children of Israel are without water, there is the murmuring and complaining and God answers to Moses, ““Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go.  Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” (Vs 5,6)”  The story is familiar, Moses strikes the rock and water comes forth, but notice how the account of the event is recorded. “And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. (Vs 6b)”
Many of us would have talked about: how I split the rock; how God’s power was present; the water gushing out; the expression of the elders; and how the people responded.   This was not how it is recorded.  It just says “and Moses did so”.  It is no wonder that Moses was called “more humble than all men who were on the face of the earth”.(Num. 12:3)  There was no boasting, no talking about what he had done, just simple obedience.  Moses did not have to give extra information about the event, the elders were the witnesses.  The elders who witnessed the event were the ones who would testify.
The challenge, as seen by Moses’ response, is, “do we boast, talk about what God has done through us, give all the facts and details, and in so doing take some of the glory and praise for ourselves, as if our power had accomplished this?  Proverbs 27:2 says, “Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.”
Lord, when You work through us, may we be slow to talk about the experience, may we let others proclaim Your works.
