Just This Once

“God help me, just this once and I’ll never again, …. “.  These are the vows and expressions that many people have made before God.  “If You help me, I’ll …”. These are similar to the words that Pharaoh makes before Moses in Exodus 10:16, 17, “Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste, and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and entreat the Lord your God, that He may take away from me this death only.””

We know that this is bad bargaining on the part of Pharaoh, especially since we know the end of the story.  Pharaoh goes through a series of softening and hardening his heart, of sinning and repenting.  In this situation God was merciful, God stepped in and removed the plague that was upon Pharaoh and the nation.  Pharaoh now had another opportunity of returning to God.  But his own self-will and obstinacy, the love of gain, and the fear of loosing power, prevailed till the end.  Pharaoh’s unwillingness to respond to what God was doing cost him the life of one dear to him.

Lord, You give all of us, second chances, help us to make the most of them by diligently  walking with You.  Help us to see what You have done for us and then may we in gratitude commit more of ourselves unto you.
