Look At Me

There is a tendency for people to want to be seen.  We want to be recognized, we want to receive credit for what we have done.  That is why the politicians try to campaign so that people will see what they have accomplished and increase their popularity .  In this context, the disciples encouraged Jesus to go to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem.  “You can’t become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!’’ (John 7:4 NLT).  Though this made sense to the disciples and it fit in with what most people would do, Jesus replied, “Now is not the right time for me to go, but you can go anytime.” (John 7:6 NLT)

Yes, there is a natural way of doing things, but does it line up with the timing of God and the way of God?  In Matthew 6:1-4 Jesus challenges people who love to do things to be seen by others.  Yes, they get the results, the reward of others seeing them, but they missed out on the truly important rewards which come from our Heavenly Father. It is easy to say that we don’t do things to be seen by others, but if we are not doing things to get the attention of others, why are we hurt if no one notices us?

Lord Jesus, grant that whatever we do in word or deed, let our hearts be humble enough to do it just for You that You would be glorified and people would see you rather than us!
