“I don’t need to “go to church”, I worship God everywhere. God is all around me so why go to church?” I often hear these comments. People explain how there is no need for regular church attendance to meet with God. Ps 139 is very clear that God is everywhere we are here on the earth, and the New Testament shows how Our Lord is with us always, even to the end of the earth. It is true that we can worship God everywhere and that we can be cognizant of God everywhere, so, why do I need to go to church?
In Deuteronomy 16:4,5 God speaks to the children of Israel about taking special time to remember the Passover, a symbol of the work of Christ on the cross. God says that the Israelites should not ” sacrifice the Passover within any of your gates which the LORD your God gives you; but at the place where the LORD your God chooses to make His name abide”. (See also vs 15, 16) God is very clear that there are specific places where we are to celebrate what He has done in our lives. In the New Testament we see that the believers met at least weekly to celebrate, worship and be encouraged (Acts 2:42, 46). As the day of the Lord’s return draws nearer, the Christians were exhorted all the more not to forsake the regular meeting with other Christians. (Hebrews 10:24,25)
It is easy to make up excuses for not gathering together with other Christians, but as believers we need to meet together regularly.
Lord Jesus, help us to value and take advantage of the opportunities which we have for gathering together with your people.
