John 4:10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10 NKJV)
How often do we come before Jesus certain that there was something that we needed. If we don’t get this we are going to die. We are just like the Samaritan woman. She thought that she needed water and her only perspective in everything that was said was that, “I need drinkable water”. Interestingly the real need of her heart, that which would truly satisfy, was right there and easily available. What she really needed, Jesus, was soon to reveal Himself to her in a way that no one else had ever done before (“Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” (John 4:10, 29 NKJV)).
How blind we can be!!! We press and press for issues, things and experiences but miss the very thing that brings true life. If we would just ask Jesus for the right thing, then He would have given living waters to us.
The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? (John 4:11 NKJV). We think that it will take a lot of work. The well is deep and we have nothing or little ability to get what we think we need. Unfortunately we think that the essence of life will come from our hard work, our skill or our intelligence, yet Jesus provides living waters at His expense and His effort.
Furthermore, the nature of this life, this living water that Jesus sets before us is such that once the process is started it ought to constantly be flowing out from within us. Wherever we go this life should flood from us and out of us. Jesus says in John 4:14 “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (See also John 7:37-39)
Lord Jesus, would You open our eyes to see how You are the one that satisfies the thirst which we have. Help us to experience your living water.
