At times it can seem like contention is all around us, people are back biting, telling lies, taking advantage of the weak, being inconsiderate and obnoxious. The list of evil and wrong responses could go on and on. Sometimes it seems like the only way to get ahead, or at least break even is if you join in and become a part of the crowd. At least that way you don’t stick out or draw attention to yourself. Since everyone else is doing it then perhaps we can justify our actions by saying, “but they do it too.”
However Paul speaks in Philippians 2:14-15 “Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. (NLT)”
From these instructions we see that we are supposed to be different, are are supposed to stick out, but in a positive way. We should not be complaining, arguing, we should not be conducting ourselves like everyone else is. We are to blameless and pure, shining brightly in the midst of the darkness around us. Just “because everyone else does it”, only means that we should shine the more with right heart attitudes and right actions.
Heavenly Father, when there seems like evil all around us, help us shine with right responses.
