“Keith, tuck your shirt in, for this occasion untucked shirts are out of style.”  I am so glad that my wife is knowledgeable on men and women’s fashions.  Working in public situations can sometimes cause one to wonder what is appropriate to wear and what is not.

One of the challenges of maturing is knowing how to get dressed, I am not talking about the ability to put socks, underwear, pants, shirts and shoes on, but rather to know what are the appropriate socks, pants and shirts.  Knowing and dressing suitably for the situation is essential.  If only the Bible could give some simple guidelines about what is the appropriate or what is not.

Wouldn’t you know it!  The scripture does give very clear guidelines on what to wear and what not wear.  Colossians gives us a list of appropriate apparel, “you must clothe yourselves with tender-hearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love (Ch 3:12-14 NLT).

Yes the physical clothes that we wear are important, but more important is that we live our lives wearing tenderness, mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and love.  These character traits are not just to be worn once, then switched to another costume when needed.  We are to consistently be covered with all of these attributes at all times.

Depending on the situations, we constantly need to be wearing more of one of these attributes than others.  Take a moment to reflect which of these important virtues you need to wear more often this week.  Then ask our Lord for His strength so that this attribute will become a stronger part of your life.
