Okay Jesus, give us Your “Trade Secrets”. What is the secret recipe? I want to know how You do it. If I were to get the same results as you do, what do I need to do? That was what the people following Jesus asked. They had just experienced the feeding of the 5,000, they may have heard how Jesus had just walked on the water or how He had just calmed the storming sea, (John 6:1-28). Their curiosity was aroused. They wanted to know the secret behind these miracles. So they asked a simple question. “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” (John 6:28)
I’m certain that Jesus’ response was not what they anticipated. Jesus responds in verse 29, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” In the Message version it says, “Throw your lot in with the One that God has sent. That kind of a commitment gets you in on God’s works.” I think that we all want the results of Jesus and we would love to have the wonders and miracles of Jesus pulsing through and around us. But are we “throwing in the lot” with total commitment to Jesus? Or are we holding back, being cautious, playing it safe? After all we don’t want to get hurt, we don’t want to be embarrassed, what if it doesn’t work?
Lord, we want to see the results of You, in greater ways. Forgive us for holding back, for not trusting You more. Let us experience the life and faithfulness of You to such an extent, that we are more willing to commit all to You.
