The Preamble

   In Exodus chapter 20, God gives the ten commandments to the children of Israel.  It is interesting that as God is about to give what would also be called the Decalogue, He introduces Himself saying, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.” (Vs2)  Why did God not introduce Himself as, “The God Who created the heavens and the earth”, or as “the God Who leads you in victory”, or “the God Who is almighty”, or “the One worthy of praise”, or “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”, or any other name or attribute of God?   What was the link between the Ten Commandments and God bringing Israel out of Egypt and out of the house of bondage?
   Many people see the commands of God as impositions, as restrictions, keeping them from enjoying the life that non followers of God would get to do.  People feel that God’s commands get in the way of them enjoying life.  However, before God gives His commands, He postures Himself and reminds the people that He is the God who liberates from captivity.  God is the One who brings people out of bondage.   As a Saviour, Redeemer, and Deliverer, God speaks.
   These commands were to continue the process of providing liberation, freedom and the removal of bondage.   Yes, the Ten Commandments keep the people away from things, but they keep from that which would ensnare and trap the people.
    How do you view the Ten Commandments?  Do you see them as guidelines to help bring life or as restrictions that interfere with what you want to do?  Ask God to help you to see Him as the great Redeemer.  Start to view all that God asks of you, in the light of Him speaking and helping to bring life and not bondage.
