There is an old hymn whose words are “What a friend we have in Jesus … ” . The concept of being a “friend of God” is a powerful encouragement within the scriptures. We humans can feel very lonely. We can feel misunderstood, unaccepted, falsely judged, trapped, and unvalued. Yet Jesus calls us to be friends with Him. What a phenomenal concept that the almighty God, through Jesus, calls us to be friends with Him. He could have called us to be slaves, or servants yet He calls us to friendship.  John 15:15 “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.”

What does it mean to be a friend?  Reflect on the aspects of your friendship with Christ that are the most meaningful to you now. Take a moment to thank God for these aspects of friendship.

What aspects of your friendship with God needs to be further developed to bring it to where you know it should be?  Take a moment to ask God to help these distinct areas to be further developed in your relationship with Him.

Verse one :What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
