Jer 17:5. “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength.”  I don’t like to think that I’m cursed but when I read this verse I couldn’t help but ask myself if perhaps I bring unsuspecting troubles upon myself.  I tend to be a hard working person, and I think that is good.  Yet how often do I plan more, study more, prepare more, work more and in so doing make my efforts “the strength of my life”.  I end up resting in what I have accomplished which would be my strength and ability.  Trusting more in myself than in God is not good.

Lord help us to have the right balance!  Yes we are to study to make ourselves approved unto God yet Paul also said that he did not come with enticing words of men’s wisdom but in the demonstration of the power of the Gospel.  Lord let our words and our actions be so structured and balanced so that there is the preparation (our responsibility) and the reliance on Your working (God’s responsibility).  Let these be in the right proportion so that You, Lord, are glorified and that the focus and praise is unto You.  Lord help us because our self focused nature causes us to think that any success was from our intelligence or our skill or our efforts when it really came from You.  Lord it’s not that we have our lives together but rather that we are walking with You, Who holds all things together.

May our trust be in the Lord, Who brings the blessing.  Verse  7  “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD.”
