English as an Additional Language (EAL) is a place to connect with other adults and help them improve English skills through classes at Church of the Rock. Our mission at Church of the Rock is to KNOW GOD, LIVE FREE, and FIND PURPOSE.
If you would like to attend classes, there are links to registration/sign-up forms below. All adults are welcome!
EAL Adults Conversation Using the Bible (Beginner/Intermediate) – Sunday mornings
- Learn English by using the Bible.
- It is for Christians or for people who want to learn about Christianity.
- 9:30-10:30 AM – Sunday mornings during the first service at 1397 Buffalo Place
- SEPT 25, 2024 through JUNE 22, 2025 ongoing
- except holiday Sundays and Christmas break (i.e. NOT on Oct. 15; not Dec. 21-Jan. 12; not April 20)
- BEGINNER Level meets in classroom A4 and INTERMEDIATE Level meets in classrooms A1 and A2
- Children may not attend the Adult Conversation Class, but the church’s regular Kidz Rock program will be running at nearly the same time as the conversation class.

- Any children attending Kidz Rock will need to be registered with Kidz Rock.

Alpha ESOL Advanced English – Sunday mornings
(The Alpha Course in English for Speakers of Other Languages)
This is a 23-week course on Sunday mornings from 9:30 AM-11:15 AM, as follows:
- starts SEPT 29 until DEC 15, 2024 – weekly (no lesson on OCT 13, 2024)
- resumes JAN 12 until APR 13, 2025
What is Alpha ESOL?
- Alpha ESOL is designed for people who do not speak English as their first language.
- Alpha ESOL will help to answer questions about life and faith and many more in a relaxed, friendly, non-threatening environment.
- You will also have the opportunity to practice listening to, speaking and reading English.
- Each week we will have a speaker, and times of discussion led by a host.
- You can feel free to respond honestly in the discussion and share what you think and feel about what you have heard.
- Participants are encouraged to ask tough questions with no fear of feeling judged or pressured.

EAL Adults Conversation Using the Bible (Intermediate) – Wednesday evenings
Learn English by using the Bible.
- SEPTEMBER 25 to DECEMBER 18, 2024
- We meet weekly at 7:00 PM on Wednesdays at 1397 Buffalo Place.
- INTERMEDIATE Level in classroom A1
- It is for Christians or for people who want to learn about Christianity.
- No childcare available. (This course is only for adults to attend without children.)
- Sign-up required.

CANADIAN CULTURE & CONVERSATION (Thursday evenings)
- Winter Session (8 weeks): January 16 – March 6, 2025
- Spring Session (6 weeks): April 10 – May 15, 2025
When: Thursdays from 7:00-8:15 PM
Where: 1397 Buffalo Place (Church of the Rock) in classroom A4
Each evening will have this format:
7:00-7:15 PM – Tips for learning English
- each week, an ESL/EAL teacher will share tips on one of the following topics: vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills
7:15-8:15 PM – Life in Canada discussion
- winter and summer safety and activities, the health care system, shopping, Canadian holidays, nutrition, etc.

EAL Conversational English
We meet YEAR ROUND each week on Monday evenings at 7:00 PM.
- IN PERSON – meeting at 570 Sharron Bay S. (Church of the Rock Bronx Park)
- Meeting is in the basement hall
- Entrance on the west side of the building, we are inside Springfield Height Mennonite Church
- Conversation groups for all levels of English.
- Small groups with one volunteer who speaks English at an advanced level.
- No childcare provided at this time.
- The Program is FREE, no registration is required.
