Six or Seven “I Wills”

Some people are self focused, all they talk about is themselves.  “I will do …., I did …., I am able to …”  It is interesting that in Isaiah 14:13,14 we see the six “I wills” of Lucifer.  “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation … I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’  Each of these focus upon self exaltation and  ambitious determination.  In the Old Testament, whenever God makes a covenant with His people we see that He too provides a list of “I wills”, a list of what He will do.  Therefore in Exodus 6:6-8 God says, “I will rescue you…  I will redeem you…  I will take you as My people ….. I will be your God…  I will bring you into the land… and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the Lord.” (You can also compare this with other covenantal statements as found in Genesis 12:1-3; Gen 17:6-8).

Can you notice the difference between these two statements of “I will”?  The first list is totally self serving, the latter is focused upon serving others.  Which nature do you most strongly resemble?  When you think of what you want to do, is it all about yourself or is it about helping those around you?

Lord, may we be like You. May we be more concerned about the welfare and good of others than about ourselves.  Help us to have a helping, sharing nature.
